Laboratory Safety Training

Ion chromatography machine

All users of any A&TS laboratory are required to complete health and safety training provided by the 黑料社 office of Environmental Health and Safety Services. Lab users are referred to the Laboratory Safety Guide and Chemical Hygiene Plan.

All users of any A&TS laboratory are required to complete orientation with the A&TS unit lab manager. Orientation will include facility operations (e.g., laboratory access, scheduling, general use of equipment, housekeeping, etc.) and unit-specific safety protocols. Orientation is important to creating a safe and efficient work environment for all users. Contact Mike Satchwell at msatchwell@esf.edu for information, scheduling and analytical requests pertaining to the IC lab.

Ion Chromatograph

A&TS operates and manages a ThermoFisher Scientific Dionex ICS-6000 HPIC System capable of simultaneously detecting anions and cations. For large projects, and with advance notice and planning, the Dionex ICS-6000 HPIC system can also be configured to work in tandem with A&TS instrumentation in mass spectrometry, ranging from single quadrupole to high resolution accurate mass (HRAM) Thermo Scientific Orbitrap mass spectrometers.

Instrument and Staff Rates

A&TS staff are available to provide consultation at no cost for an initial one-hour period on each research project. After the first hour, the following per-hour charges will apply. Consultation is available to our academic customers to aid with proposal or method development. Training to develop sample preparation techniques or instrument operation may be available based upon a user鈥檚 prior knowledge and experience with fundamental theory, methods and instrument operation. A&TS staff are solely authorized to determine whether an individual has attained sufficient proficiency to operate in the lab independently of A&TS staff supervision.

Cost of supplies, materials

Rates are effective 7/1/2025 and are subject to change. Please confirm rates with A&TS staff prior to submitting proposal budgets.

Per-sample charge applies to all injections for method development, QA/QC (e.g., blanks, duplicates, calibration checks) and unknowns. This charge basis helps recover costs for analyzing small numbers of samples, method development, consumables (e.g., gases, tubing, cones, lenses, reference standards), data reduction time, and instrument service and maintenance.

Analyst support for IC analyses will be billed at the applicable per-hour rate for services such as sample preparation, method development, data processing, spectral analysis and interpretation, or reporting.

Discount Options

The analyst fee may be waived if sample analysis is performed by the qualified PI or graduate student.

The analyst fee may also be waived if the PI researcher agrees to collaborate with A&TS staff on authoring publications.  Collaborative projects will be charged at 75% of the normal instrument rate and are expected to include co-authorship on derivative publications.
