Summary (what you get)
ºÚÁÏÉç faculty and students may obtain access to more robust computing resources as needed for research purposes. ºÚÁÏÉç has a limited on-premise workstations and a shared pool of virtual machine space that can be provisioned as needed for a scheduled period of time. SU compute resources can also be made accessible after a conversation concerning need and usage restrictions. Please see below for further details.
Service Includes
Research Virtual Computers
- Windows or Linux
- More oomph than standard workstations
- Shared pool of resources
Storage
- Expanded storage on local network, like Cifs or Saturn (not just one kind)
- Expanded storage on OneDrive/Teams
Alternative Research Computer Configurations
Departmental research computers can be configured in alternative ways to help facilitate research.
Power User
- Using R, Python, or Anaconda for modelling
- Provides a space on a machine that will mimic admin rights
- Step-by-step directions are available
- Windows machines only
Temporary Admin (monitor mode)
- Windows and Mac
- For finite period of time
- Will automatically go back to standard user on the date indicated by user
- Use cases would be vendor install, field location for two weeks with need for software/equipment install, or similar situations
Isolated Research Machine
- Local account on the device as admin (cannot use your ºÚÁÏÉçiD)
- Internet but no access to internal ºÚÁÏÉç resources (Saturn, Intranet)
- Must work from this device, cannot remote into it
- Can remote from the device into something else
- No office desktop applications or browser based access to office (this means no email)
- Must be a secondary device, need something else as a primary (email, blackboard, etc)

Syracuse University Research Computing
Research computing at Syracuse University is a collaborative effort between the campus research community and technology groups from across campus. The technology groups include both distributed information technology teams as well as support from Information Technology Services (ITS) which provides research computing infrastructure resources. Available resources include High Throughput Computing (HTC), virtual private cloud (AVHE), virtual private cloud (Crush), and GPU-based computing (SUrge).
Service Does Not Include
Apple devices are not able to be setup for research purposes. It is recommended to use a secondary device for research.
